Microsoft recently (late 2004) announced that support for Windows XP RTM has ended. RTM in this case means Release To Manufacturing, a fancy way to describe the original Windows XP software. What this means is that you will no longer be able to obtain patches and fixes for the original release of Windows XP, if you are still running it. If you have a problem, youre stuck. Even paying for support will not help you. Now what? The good news is that you are probably NOT running the RTM version of Windows XP. Most modern computers are delivered with Windows XP with Service Pack 1 (also known as SP1). You might have Service Pack 1A, instead of SP1 in some cases. Its also easy to obtain Service Pack 2, the latest update to Windows. These revisions of Windows are still supported at the time of this article. If you dont have the latest Service Pack, and you work for a large organization, it might be that the computer administrators at your company have their own plan for rolling out computer changes. Want to continue to receive security and other updates? Make sure you have the right Service Pack installed.
